Readers interested in Scandinavian literature can join Vesterheim’s October bokprat, a monthly online book-group discussion focused on Scandinavian authors and Scandinavian life. The session will examine Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck on October 28, 2026, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Central time.

The discussion will take place online through Zoom, giving participants a way to attend remotely. Vesterheim describes bokprat as a recurring gathering for discussing Scandinavian writing and culture.

A family story shaped by hidden truths

Written in 1884 by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, The Wild Duck follows an idealistic son who exposes his corrupt merchant father’s duplicity. His effort to save the people around him instead destroys the very people he hopes to help.

The play centers on the Ekdal family, whose fragile peace is disrupted by Gregers Werle, an idealist determined to reveal concealed truths. The resulting story explores deception, betrayal and the disillusionment of modern life while also incorporating comedy and satire.

Free class requires registration

Vesterheim says the play was written in a realistic style, although literary scholars have noted its connection to symbolism. It is also regarded as the first modern masterpiece in the genre of tragicomedy.

The October bokprat is free, but registration is required. Participants can use Vesterheim’s event page to sign up and add the program to Google Calendar, iCalendar, Outlook 365 or Outlook Live.
