WinnMed plans to add Dr. Megan Slattery, D.O., to its Decorah medical team at the end of August 2026, giving local patients another option for family medicine, obstetric care and inpatient treatment. Appointments may be requested by calling WinnMed at 563-382-2911 or through MyChart.
Slattery will join WinnMed’s Decorah family medicine service in a broad clinical role covering primary care, obstetric services and hospitalist care for patients who are in the hospital. WinnMed expects her arrival to expand access to care across different ages and stages of life.
Services planned for Decorah patients
WinnMed describes Slattery’s work as full-spectrum family medicine. The service can include preventive medicine, chronic-condition management, wellness support and coordination with specialists when needed.
Along with seeing patients in the clinic, Slattery will provide obstetric care and serve as a hospitalist. WinnMed’s family medicine service already serves patients in Decorah and operates outreach locations in Ossian, Mabel and the Luther College campus clinic.
Slattery also has a particular interest in incorporating exercise and nutrition into health planning. She plans to offer community education focused on health and wellness, extending her work beyond individual appointments and into public-health education.
Training and rural-medicine focus
Slattery is an Iowa native and Iowa State University alumna. She attended A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, and completed her family medicine residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines.
She said rural medicine appealed to her because it gives physicians the opportunity to build relationships with patients and provide continuity of care. During a visit to WinnMed, she said the health system’s commitment to quality care and the community’s support for local health care stood out.
“When I first visited WinnMed, the dedication among staff and the genuine support for the health system from the community were evident,” says Dr. Slattery. “I could immediately see myself as part of the team, and I am grateful to be joining a health system that shares a commitment to providing high-quality care close to home.”
Moving closer to family was another benefit of the position, she said.
“It’s an added bonus that family isn’t too far away!”
A whole-patient approach
Slattery said she considers the factors that may affect a person’s health before working with each patient to set individual goals. She uses evidence-based information to guide education and care.
“I provide care with a whole-patient approach, recognizing there are many factors that play a role in our health and wellbeing. I work with my patients to address and meet their health goals, using evidence-based information to provide education and guide care.”
Outside medicine, Slattery enjoys spending time with her fiancée and dog. Her interests include running, biking, hiking, reading and cheering for the Iowa State Cyclones.
