WinnMed plans to add Megan Slattery, D.O., to its Decorah medical team at the end of August 2026, giving area patients another local option for family medicine, obstetric care and inpatient treatment as a hospitalist.
Patients may request appointments with Slattery by calling WinnMed at 563-382-2911 or using MyChart, according to the health system.
Services Slattery will provide
Slattery will practice full-spectrum family medicine, a model that serves patients across different ages and stages of life. Her work in Decorah will include primary care, obstetric services and care for hospitalized patients.
That range of care can include preventive medicine, chronic-condition management, wellness support and coordination with specialists when needed. WinnMed’s family medicine service already serves patients in Decorah and operates outreach locations in Ossian, Mabel and the Luther College campus clinic.
Slattery has a particular interest in incorporating exercise and nutrition into health planning. She also plans to provide community education focused on health and wellness, extending her work beyond individual appointments to include a public-health component.
Training and rural-medicine focus
Slattery is an Iowa native and Iowa State University alumna. She attended A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, and completed her family medicine residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines.
WinnMed said rural medicine attracted Slattery because it allows physicians to build relationships with patients and provide continuity of care. During a visit to WinnMed, she said the organization’s commitment to high-quality care and the community’s support for its local health system stood out.
“When I first visited WinnMed, the dedication among staff and the genuine support for the health system from the community were evident,” says Dr. Slattery. “I could immediately see myself as part of the team, and I am grateful to be joining a health system that shares a commitment to providing high-quality care close to home.”
Being closer to family was another benefit of the move, she said.
“It’s an added bonus that family isn’t too far away!”
A whole-patient approach
Slattery said she considers the factors that can affect a person’s health before working with each patient on individual goals. She uses evidence-based information to guide education and care.
“I provide care with a whole-patient approach, recognizing there are many factors that play a role in our health and wellbeing. I work with my patients to address and meet their health goals, using evidence-based information to provide education and guide care.”
Outside medicine, Slattery enjoys time with her fiancée and dog. Her interests include running, biking, hiking, reading and cheering for the Iowa State Cyclones.
