WinnMed is adding Megan Slattery, D.O., to its medical team at the end of August, bringing a physician who will provide family medicine, obstetric services and inpatient care as a hospitalist.
Dr. Slattery’s arrival gives patients another option for comprehensive primary care through WinnMed’s family medicine service in Decorah. Appointments can be requested by calling 563-382-2911 or through MyChart.
New physician will provide broad range of care
WinnMed said Slattery will practice full-spectrum family medicine, meaning her work will cover patients’ health needs across ages and stages of life. She will also provide obstetric care and care for hospitalized patients during their stays at WinnMed.
Family medicine clinicians serve as primary healthcare providers, with responsibilities that include preventive care, chronic-condition management, wellness support and coordination with specialists when needed. WinnMed’s family medicine team serves patients in Decorah and also operates outreach locations in Ossian, Mabel and the Luther College campus clinic.
Slattery has a particular interest in incorporating exercise and nutrition into health planning. She also plans to provide community education focused on health and wellness.
Training and connection to northeast Iowa
Slattery is an Iowa native and Iowa State University alum. She attended medical school at A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, and completed her family medicine residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines.
WinnMed said Slattery was drawn to northeast Iowa by the relationships and continuity of care associated with rural medicine. During a visit to WinnMed, she said she was impressed by the organization’s commitment to high-quality care and by the community’s support for its local health system.

Whole-patient approach
Slattery said her approach is to consider the range of factors affecting a patient’s health, then work with patients on their individual goals. She described using evidence-based information to guide education and care.
“I provide care with a whole-patient approach, recognizing there are many factors that play a role in our health and wellbeing. I work with my patients to address and meet their health goals, using evidence-based information to provide education and guide care.”
Outside her medical work, Slattery enjoys spending time with her fiancée and dog, along with running, biking, hiking, reading and cheering for the Iowa State Cyclones.
