Decorah-area readers will have a chance to discuss a classic Scandinavian drama from home this fall when Vesterheim hosts an online Bokprat gathering devoted to Henrik Ibsen’s Lady From the Sea. The free program is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Central time.

The discussion will take place through Zoom rather than at Vesterheim’s museum. For participants in Decorah and elsewhere, the online format means the evening conversation can be joined remotely without traveling to the museum.

How to participate

Attendance is free, but readers must register in advance. Vesterheim’s event listing is the registration point and provides the information needed to participate online. After completing the registration process, attendees will be able to join the Zoom conversation on the scheduled Wednesday evening.

About Ibsen’s drama

First published in 1888, Lady From the Sea follows Ellida and Doctor Wangel, a married couple. Doctor Wangel is a widower with two daughters, while Ellida becomes increasingly anxious and begins behaving strangely as the drama develops.

Concerned about Ellida, Doctor Wangel asks his former headmaster, Arnholm, to visit in an effort to help her. The play examines the pressure love can place on a person’s heart and the difficult personal decisions that may follow.

Vesterheim’s Nov. 11 event is part of its recurring Bokprat series. The name means “book group” in Norwegian, and the online gatherings focus on Scandinavian authors and Scandinavian life. The series offers readers an ongoing opportunity for literary discussion and connection.

For Decorah residents and other readers interested in joining the conversation, advance registration through Vesterheim’s event listing is the next step. Because the program is online, participants will not need to travel to Vesterheim for the discussion.
