Decorah-area readers will be able to discuss Henrik Ibsen’s classic Scandinavian drama from home this fall when Vesterheim hosts an online Bokprat gathering focused on Lady From the Sea. The free discussion is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, and will run from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Central time.

The program will be held through Zoom, not at Vesterheim’s museum. That means participants can join remotely from Decorah or elsewhere without traveling to the museum for the evening discussion.

How to join Vesterheim’s online discussion

Attendance is free, but advance registration is required. Readers who want to participate should complete the registration process through Vesterheim’s event listing before the program begins. After registering, participants will be able to join the Zoom conversation on the scheduled Wednesday evening.

Vesterheim’s event listing is the registration point and provides the information needed to participate online.

What the book group will explore

First published in 1888, Lady From the Sea follows Ellida and Doctor Wangel, a married couple. Doctor Wangel is a widower with two daughters, while Ellida becomes increasingly anxious and begins behaving strangely as the drama develops.

Concerned about Ellida, Doctor Wangel asks his former headmaster, Arnholm, to visit in an effort to help her. The play examines the pressure love can place on a person’s heart, along with the difficult personal decisions that may follow.

Vesterheim’s Nov. 11 program is part of the museum’s recurring Bokprat series. “Bokprat” means “book group” in Norwegian, and the online gatherings focus on Scandinavian authors and Scandinavian life. The series gives readers an ongoing opportunity for literary discussion and connection.

For Decorah residents and other readers interested in taking part, registering through Vesterheim’s event listing is the next step. Since the gathering is online, participants will not need to travel to Vesterheim for the program.
