Visitors planning to hike at Pulpit Rock should expect a temporary change to the trail system. The Lower Pulpit Rock Trail and part of the Preacher’s Chair Trail are closed for repairs, although the lookout remains accessible.
Decorah Parks and Recreation announced the closure effective June 18, 2026. The agency said maintenance work is intended to improve safety and restore sections of the trail. Trail users are being asked to avoid the closed areas while the work is underway.

The closure affects the red-marked section shown on the park’s map. Visitors can still reach the lookout, but they cannot complete the full loop. The department asked for patience and cooperation while repairs are completed.
The closure is one of several recreation updates posted by Decorah Park Rec as the community moves through its 2026 summer calendar. The listings include organized activities for runners, hikers, cyclists, families and adults with special needs.
Upcoming activities in Decorah
Trail Night is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13. Participants are to meet by 6 p.m. at the Van Peenen Parking Lot. The event offers biking, hiking and running options, with group leaders for beginner, intermediate and advanced participants.
A free movie in the park is planned for Saturday, Aug. 22, at Will Baker Park. The listing identifies the event as open to the community but does not name the film.
Decorah’s Get-2-Gether Committee and Decorah Parks and Recreation will host a free Summer Celebration for adults with special needs from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Whalen Cabin near Phelps Park. The evening is to include music, games and Mabes Pizza. Luther College soccer teams are expected to provide volunteers.
Participants in the Summer Celebration must register by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, so organizers can plan. Registration is available online at get2g.com or through the Decorah Parks and Recreation office at (563) 382-4158 and the email address listed in the department’s announcement. The event is offered at no cost through sponsors and community donations.

The department also lists Gnomes in the Park, a Nordic Fest scavenger hunt beginning Tuesday, July 21. Participants can get a form and map from the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce or download them, then follow clues to find gnomes and enter a drawing for a prize.
The Fair Fun Run is set for Saturday, July 18. It includes a three-quarter-mile race for children 12 and younger and a three-mile race for older children and adults. Refreshments, awards for first through third place in each age division and a drawing prize are part of the event.
Decorah is also scheduled to host Iowa Scholastic Mountain Bike Races on Saturday, June 20. The department said its fall brochure is expected Aug. 14. Residents should check the latest Parks and Recreation information before visiting Pulpit Rock, as the trail repair closure may change when work is complete.
