Decorah residents interested in Norwegian-American art will be able to study rosemaling, botanical design and plant history from home during a free Vesterheim Cultural Connections webinar on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026.
The online program is scheduled for 3 to 4 p.m. Central Time and will last one hour. Since the event will be held online, residents will not need to travel to Vesterheim or another venue to participate. What the Decorah-area webinar will cover
Artist Tara will demonstrate 10 rosemaling designs inspired by plants of the boreal ecosystem. The presentation will show how traditional rosemaling brushwork can be used in contemporary botanical design, giving viewers an opportunity to see newer interpretations of plant forms while learning how established techniques continue to evolve.
The featured designs will draw inspiration from Trout Lily, Rowan Berry, Lady’s Slipper, Blue Flag Iris, Wild Rose, Coral Root, Arrowhead, Pipsissewa, Marsh Marigold and Maple Leaf.
The plants will not be treated only as subjects for viewers to copy. The webinar will examine how traditional painting practices can be adapted for contemporary botanical art, with a focus on the relationship between historic craft methods and modern design.
Art demonstration will connect to plant classification
Beyond the brushwork, the program will connect botanical art with the history of plant classification. The discussion will reference Carl Linnaeus and his apprentice, Anders Dahl, linking scientific history with the webinar’s broader focus on plant-centered artwork.
