A local outdoor-gear sale has delivered its largest donation yet to Decorah Parks and Recreation. The fifth annual Decorah Gear Exchange raised $3,638.25, setting a single-year fundraising record for the event.

The two-day fall consignment sale was held Sept. 26-27 at Pulpit Rock Brewing Company. It brought together outdoor enthusiasts, families and bargain hunters while giving gently used recreation gear a second life.

How the gear exchange supports Decorah recreation

Established in 2022, the Decorah Gear Exchange is designed to make outdoor recreation more accessible. Community members can buy and sell new or gently used gear through the annual sale.

At least 20% of the proceeds from every item sold supports Decorah Parks and Recreation. Some contributors choose to donate 100% of their sales to the cause, increasing the amount available for local recreation.

Together, those contributions support the parks, programs and recreational resources that serve the Decorah community. The latest total exceeds every previous single-year donation from the event, according to the event announcement.

Community event combines reuse and fundraising

The exchange links outdoor recreation with sustainability by keeping usable equipment in circulation rather than treating it as waste. It also gives residents an opportunity to find recreation gear at a consignment sale while contributing to local parks.

Organizers described the fifth annual event as a celebration of outdoor recreation, sustainability and community. Its record result provides additional support for Decorah's parks and recreational opportunities.
